From the Quiet Places
What a wonder is the mind of man!
So full of intricate connections,
twists and turns,
and unexpected
dead-ends.

I wonder
if God would lobotomize a man
to save him.

Jesus said
a simple man
who his like a child
would inherit the kingdom.

Yet God made
all the hollow places
all the empty corridors
all the shadowy corners;
and when His breath
blows over them,
it whistles.

Will His light illuminate
all my twisted darkness?
Will it transform my fears,
shape my anger,
and make my tendency
to rationalize and manipulate
a balm of service and love?

Or will His sword of judgment
cleave all that part away?

May the Gospel at work in me,
be, as Jesus said, like a mustard seed;
may the roots of the tree of life
fill all the thin and empty places in my soul;
may God, in this weak and fragile shrub
be glorified.

Amen
